Narrative:

When climbing through 15000 we got a very loud and rapid banging noise coming from the service door. The flight attendant called and confirmed this was the source of the banging. We had no door messages or pressure problems. I told center we were returning to our departure airport. The banging stopped when we started our descent. We landed and called dispatch and maintenance. Maintenance tried to talk me into flying back to ZZZ after contract maintenance said it looked O.K. To him. I said I would not ; the only way I would bring it back was as an unpressurized maintenance ferry. They finally said all right. Later that day I learned the service door had a seal with a four inch cut in it.
