Narrative:
I relieved another controller on local 1 with busy traffic. After the mandatory two minute monitoring; the controller that was relieved interrupted me to indicate that the overlap time was complete and that I needed to complete the overlap by selecting the briefing button and having his/her record 'overlap complete'. I did not need this sort of distraction as it caused me to lose the 'traffic picture' and I had to struggle to regain my mental picture. Recommendation; I think that the requirement to have an overlap monitoring period is good but the requirement to record 'overlap complete' at the end of the two-minute overlap monitoring period is unsafe.
