Narrative:

Advised of a 20 minute hold at arrival gate fix due traffic caused by weather impeding approaches. Given hold and we told approach unable to hold beyond 15 minutes. After 2 turns; unable to obtain route to approach. I declared an emergency and requested route around weather. Picked our way around storms without much ATC help! Constantly had to ask for lower altitude. One controller said he was not advised we were an emergency aircraft. Landed without incident; fob (fuel on board) at gate 12.8. Airport safety report was filed. ATC had not advised them that an emergency aircraft had even landed! Service from ATC was poor!
