Narrative:

Aircraft climbed through assigned altitude, 31000' (FL310). Stopped climb manually at 31400'. Suspect FMC computer malfunction (after xchking with left, center and right irus and left, center and right automatic pilots). Continued to bwi manually flown with computer back up. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following: this was a new aircraft. The company had only had them 6 months and the pilot was also fairly new on the aircraft. Said this was the first occurrence his company had and was possible he inadvertently activated something he had not intended to activate and deactivated capture mode.

Title: ACR LGT IN AUTO MODE FAILED TO CAPTURE AND OVERSHOT ALT.

Narrative: ACFT CLBED THROUGH ASSIGNED ALT, 31000' (FL310). STOPPED CLB MANUALLY AT 31400'. SUSPECT FMC COMPUTER MALFUNCTION (AFTER XCHKING WITH LEFT, CENTER AND RIGHT IRUS AND LEFT, CENTER AND RIGHT AUTO PLTS). CONTINUED TO BWI MANUALLY FLOWN WITH COMPUTER BACK UP. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING: THIS WAS A NEW ACFT. THE COMPANY HAD ONLY HAD THEM 6 MONTHS AND THE PLT WAS ALSO FAIRLY NEW ON THE ACFT. SAID THIS WAS THE FIRST OCCURRENCE HIS COMPANY HAD AND WAS POSSIBLE HE INADVERTENTLY ACTIVATED SOMETHING HE HAD NOT INTENDED TO ACTIVATE AND DEACTIVATED CAPTURE MODE.
