Narrative:
We were on the ILS with flaps set at 20. The first officer asked for gear down and flaps 30. When selected; the flaps fail message came on. The flaps indicated that they remained at 20. We notified the tower; abandoned the approach and got vectors to perform the QRH and make another approach. The checklist items were accomplished; we asked for equipment to stand by; then made the approach and landing without further incident.
