Narrative:

Holding short 16C (after landing 16R); told by the tower to expedite crossing 16C (at P). I immediately added power while releasing brakes but when half-way across the hold line another voice came on and canceled our clearance to cross. I stopped the aircraft fully past the hold short line but short of the runway itself. I told the tower that we were across the hold line. He came back and said never mind and to continue. Since there was a jet on short final I aggressively added power and hurried across 16C. I felt there was never any danger and there was plenty of room (we would have been well clear of the runway before the jet could have touched down); but the tower (the supervisor?) told the jet to go around. The cancellation of the crossing and then the never-mind/continue; made a totally safe crossing an unsmooth affair. This should never have happened and I am submitting this report because I would like an explanation as to why the conflicting crossing clearances occurred! Possibly the supervisor thought I was proceeding too slowly; but with the spool up it could not have happened any quicker.

Original NASA ASRS Text

Title: Air Carrier Captain took exception to a late hold short call by--possibly--a Tower Supervisor after the other Controller had previously cleared them to cross a parallel runway. By the time they had stopped they were across the hold short line and the Tower recleared them to cross and then directed an aircraft on final to go around due to a perceived conflict.
