Narrative:

Commencing approach; outside the FAF; as flaps were selected to 1; EICAS displayed 'slat fail' message. Slats did not extend. Flaps extended to position 1. Approach was discontinued in coordination with approach. First officer assumed flying pilot duties and captain conducted QRH procedures. 'Slats fail' procedure was accomplished resulting in a slats 0; flaps 2 landing. Runway 22 was chosen for landing as it was longer and more favorable for the prevailing winds. An emergency was not declared; but we requested that the emergency crew was standing by for landing. The flight attendants were notified of the situation and an announcement was made to the passengers. Company was notified via ACARS message to controlling dispatcher. An uneventful landing was then accomplished.
