Narrative:

Aircraft X on the ground; was given a clearance to his destination. I was working flight data and took his call requesting for release. I told him to 'standby for release;' after which I put down the phone and went to get a release time with the controller. I went back to talk to aircraft X but the pilot had hung up. After a few minutes I noticed he had taken off. I notified the flm and we listened to the tape. Incorrect phraseology was used on my part. I should have told the pilot 'hold for release.' also on the tape was the pilot saying; 'say again'; which I missed because I had put the phone down. I should have used proper phraseology and also waited for an acknowledgment from the pilot.
