Narrative:

I was working a communication problem on a B737-700 aircraft. I found the VHF digital radio (vdr) to be the problem; so I ordered a new one. A new vdr was dropped off at the airplane. I put it in assuming the effectivity had been checked; by assuming the part was effective I was at fault. To make sure it doesn't happen again I will always check the effectivity myself. The part was changed in ZZZ after records caught the problem.

Title: A Line Mechanic reports he installed a VHF Digital Radio (VDR) after trouble shooting a communication problem. The VDR was later found not effective for the B737-700; he had assumed the VDR effectivity had already been checked.
