Narrative:

During the installation of the side strap on the windshield/window on the right hand side of a crj-200 aircraft; a vertical seal was noticed to be missing between windows; underneath the side strap. The illustrated parts catalog (ipc) for the window shows that no seal was supposed to be there; but the ipc for the windshield does show that part. We installed a part that had the same base part number but different dash number because we believed it to be the same material but different length that the ipc shows. The ipc is unclear about the material that is supposed to be used in this location. Rtv was originally found. An e-mail has been sent to bombardier requesting the information on the different part numbers and what the different dash numbers mean; to determine if the wrong seal was installed. Ensure proper parts and materials are on hand prior to replacing a window or windshield.

Title: A Lead Mechanic reports about the difficulty determining if a vertical seal is required at the vertical post frame between the Co-pilot's forward windshield outboard aft end; and the right hand side window forward end. The CRJ-200 Illustrated Parts Catalog (IPC) shows a seal for the forward windshield; but not one for the right side window.
