Narrative:

I cleared vehicle X on an active surface without realizing it. Once I realized the situation; I coordinated with the local controller and notified the controller-in-charge (controller in charge)/supervisor. Recommendation; we work with a magnetic board and chips for indicators for active surfaces and runways. During an east or west operation this board becomes very cluttered. I would recommend that we reduce this clutter by keeping just the active chips on the board rather than both hot and cold chips for all surfaces.
