Narrative:

I was working local control 2 and observed aircraft X on short final to runway 4R. Air carrier Y was the arrival behind aircraft X and was beginning to compress with the aircraft on final. I had aircraft X in sight on short final and observed air carrier Y on final and provided visual separation between both aircraft. I was informed that this occurrence was possibly being classified as an operational error. Recommendation; it is completely standard and normal for mdw to get minimum separation on final from C90 during both VFR and IFR conditions. Since it is much harder to provide visual separation during IFR conditions; mdw arrivals should be spaced out to a minimum of 4-5 miles apart at the outer marker; instead of the 3-4 that we usually get; and sometimes even 2.5.

Title: MDW Controller was informed of an operational error that involved their application of visual separation between two arrival aircraft; reporter contending additional separation should be provided by C90 Controllers.
