Narrative:

There was an air leak at entry door upon takeoff. Door handles were firmly down. No emergency light in cockpit went off. Returned to departure airport. Maintenance advised aircraft ok -- presume 1st agent did not close door on outside properly. After I armed my doors I advised cockpit -- your red switch is down -- my door handles are down and cross checks are complete and we are ready to go. As wheels left runway a severe air leak occurred -- it did not go away at 10;000 ft so called captain to advise of problem. When we returned to gate mechanics were on jet bridge and advised as we pulled up the entry door was open approximately 1.5 inches. First officer backed flight attendant that door handles were down and no emergency light went off in cockpit.
