Narrative:

Flight at FL370 in cruise approximately. Captain's windshield outer pane shattered. Declared emergency began descent and diverted. First officer was flying and remained so for the duration of the flight. I ran the checklist for cracked window; communicated with the cabin crew and passengers and ATC. I notified dispatch by ACARS and otherwise followed all company policies and procedures in regards to all operations. Taxied and parked at gate without incident. I phoned the dispatcher and maintenance to discuss the situation and then made the appropriate maintenance log entries. Captain's windshield cracked and then the outer pane shattered. Crack propagated slowly from the lower right corner of the window horizontally across the length of the window and when it reached the full width of the window the whole pane of the outer window shattered.
