Narrative:

Aircraft had a non-airworthy captain's seat. The horizontal control springs that hold the seat in position were broken and would not hold the seat reliably in position. Thankfully there was not a incident or accident that I know of due to this malfunction. I was debriefed by incoming captain when I got to the aircraft; and he relayed to me that the seat was malfunctioning. After I got in the cockpit; I found it unserviceable and put it in the log. After the mechanic showed up; he in fact found both springs that hold the seat in position to be broken.
