Narrative:

No ATC presence; rural airport with published and long-standing right hand pattern. My intentions were to take off; remain in the pattern and accomplish a touch-and-go after take off and prior to departing the airport area. During the preflight phase I was on unicom and heard an incoming/arriving aircraft. After hearing that he was 8 miles out I transmitted to him that I would take the active runway and takeoff prior to his arrival. He communicated back that he understood my intentions and that my intentions were compatible to his. Expecting that he was in the published right hand pattern I departed and turned into a left hand pattern further expecting that I would locate him visually; cross the field while maintaining visual separation from him while communicating and follow him to the runway to avoid any conflict. Upon climbing into the left hand pattern he communicated that he was 'right' behind me in the pattern. This was unexpected. A possible collision could have occurred. I confirmed that he was in a left hand pattern. He re-confirmed this situation and that he was behind me. I told him at first that I would extend my downwind but then changed that to advise him that I would do a low approach (shortened touch-and-go). Comment: in this communication I hoped to avoid further potential conflict and depart the area. The potential collision occurred due to; (1) my lack of fully communicating my intentions prior to takeoff and 2) the arriving pilot's failure to fly the published down-wind procedure.
