Narrative:
I was landing on runway 8L at atl. On roll out; I missed taxiway D by about 50' and made a 180 degree turn to get on the taxiway. The tower did not appreciate this because of in-trail traffic. They suggested it is better to roll down to the next taxiway; while keeping the speed up. In the future; I will only do a 180 degree turn to exit the runway when the tower says it is ok. I displayed an attitude where even though I had missed the taxiway; I still wanted to feel like I had made it. I also thought I was helping the tower by getting off the runway quickly; but that was not the case.
