Narrative:
Approaching runway 34L (overrun), we, in air carrier X, were told by reno tower: 'cleared for takeoff heading 330 degree.' while taxiing 90 degree to the runway and entering the runway, corp Y was seen very close on approach. Corp Y was about to land on 34L. Upon stopping short of centerline, we questioned the tower which in turn told corp Y to go around. The tower then apologized to corp Y and cited the current runway change taking place. It appears corp Y was forgotten when air carrier X was cleared for takeoff. Other factors: 1) the copilot and engineer were occupied with cockpit duties due to the fact we had delayed starting the center engine to save fuel. 2) corp Y did not have a landing light on. 3) desert visibility and ranges made me think corp Y aircraft was a larger aircraft further out. The previous aircraft had been just that.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR CLEARED FOR TKOF WHILE CORPORATE JET ON SHORT FINAL SAME RWY. CORPORATE ACFT HAD TO MAKE GO AROUND. OPERATIONAL ERROR.
Narrative: APCHING RWY 34L (OVERRUN), WE, IN ACR X, WERE TOLD BY RENO TWR: 'CLRED FOR TKOF HDG 330 DEG.' WHILE TAXIING 90 DEG TO THE RWY AND ENTERING THE RWY, CORP Y WAS SEEN VERY CLOSE ON APCH. CORP Y WAS ABOUT TO LAND ON 34L. UPON STOPPING SHORT OF CENTERLINE, WE QUESTIONED THE TWR WHICH IN TURN TOLD CORP Y TO GO AROUND. THE TWR THEN APOLOGIZED TO CORP Y AND CITED THE CURRENT RWY CHANGE TAKING PLACE. IT APPEARS CORP Y WAS FORGOTTEN WHEN ACR X WAS CLRED FOR TKOF. OTHER FACTORS: 1) THE COPLT AND ENGINEER WERE OCCUPIED WITH COCKPIT DUTIES DUE TO THE FACT WE HAD DELAYED STARTING THE CENTER ENG TO SAVE FUEL. 2) CORP Y DID NOT HAVE A LNDG LIGHT ON. 3) DESERT VISIBILITY AND RANGES MADE ME THINK CORP Y ACFT WAS A LARGER ACFT FURTHER OUT. THE PREVIOUS ACFT HAD BEEN JUST THAT.
