Narrative:

Following a normal climb; soon after being cleared on course and climbing thru 19;500'; we experienced a loud boom; shuddering of the aircraft and yaw to the right with a slight nose pitch down. Engine instruments indicated #2 engine failure. An emergency was declared and the engine fire/severe damage memory items were completed and the engine was secured. We requested and were given vectors back to the departure airport. During the descent we completed the appropriate checklists; kept the flight attendants and passengers informed; and prepared for a single engine; flaps 15 landing. Prior to 10;000' I took over as flying pilot for the single engine approach/landing. The landing was uneventful and after clearing the runway; I stopped the aircraft and consulted with standing by emergency personnel. There was no fire/smoke or any other indication to prohibit continuing so we proceeded to the gate and deplaned the passengers without event.
