Narrative:

After extensive vectors due to enroute/arrival weather we were finally given holding at hobart VOR with an efc approximately 45 minutes later. No problem with fuel at that point with okc and sps fairly close and with okay weather. After about 15 minutes we were given radar vectors west with no clearance to dfw that I recall which is why I submit this report. We were vectored about extensively to the west and then to the south in a very frustrating sequence of zig-zag vectors. I understand the dynamic nature of changing weather and approach control in-trail requirements; but without a stated clearance/intent for us; and a no longer applicable efc; we were really at a disadvantage (to say the least) in trying to stay on top of alternate selection options; ie; when and where as we continually re-calculate fuel needs; alternate choices; route options; etc. I feel we were very much on top of this very dynamic situation; but feel ATC really exacerbated the complexity of the circumstances with poor communication to us of clearance; vector timing; goals; destination; etc. I feel strongly that this situation is/was trouble waiting to happen. I hope some coordination with dfw center and approach can head off future trouble.
