Flight cvg-sdf cleared on a 250 degree heading to 8000', moderate turbulence. Requested 10000', assigned 12000', repeated such to controller. Through 10500' we were asked our altitude by ATC and told him 10500'. He said we were only assigned 10000'. We responded that he had assigned us 12000'. He denied it and reclred us to 10000'.

Narrative: FLT CVG-SDF CLRED ON A 250 DEG HDG TO 8000', MODERATE TURB. REQUESTED 10000', ASSIGNED 12000', REPEATED SUCH TO CTLR. THROUGH 10500' WE WERE ASKED OUR ALT BY ATC AND TOLD HIM 10500'. HE SAID WE WERE ONLY ASSIGNED 10000'. WE RESPONDED THAT HE HAD ASSIGNED US 12000'. HE DENIED IT AND RECLRED US TO 10000'.
