Narrative:

During a visual approach we experienced an asymmetric trailing edge flap indication without an EICAS message. Flaps were normal until selecting flaps twenty degrees. No adverse roll was apparent with split indication. After executing a go-around; we followed the procedures in the QRH; requested holding and declared an emergency. We entered the hold; but as we turned outbound we requested vectors for landing. All checklists were completed and the landing was uneventful. Crash fire rescue equipment equipment followed us to the gate; where we deplaned the passengers and met with maintenance.
