Narrative:

After the initial departure heading of 190 degrees from ewr's runway 22R, we were told by departure to turn right to a heading (approximately) 270 degrees and cleared to climb to 10000' MSL. Shortly thereafter, we were told to turn to a northeast heading of 050 degrees. I was hand flying the aircraft and climbing out at approximately 4000 FPM and 245 KTS indicated. Passing through 7300', the controller told us to level off at 7000'. The first officer acknowledged 7000' and I started push over to go back to 7000'. Another controller came on frequency at this time and told us to continue climb to 8000'. We acknowledged and leveled off at 8000'. The new controller, apparently a supervisor, told us an light transport jet was at our 12 O'clock position climbing out of 8500' going to 10000'. I don't recall exactly the horizontal distance, but I believe it was 2 1/2-3 mi. I made the comment to the first officer that it looked close upon visual contact with the traffic. After clearing traffic, we were cleared on course with no further problems.

Title: LESS THAN STANDARD SEPARATION BETWEEN DEPARTING LTT AND FOLLOWING ACR-MLG.

Narrative: AFTER THE INITIAL DEP HDG OF 190 DEGS FROM EWR'S RWY 22R, WE WERE TOLD BY DEP TO TURN RIGHT TO A HDG (APPROX) 270 DEGS AND CLRED TO CLB TO 10000' MSL. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, WE WERE TOLD TO TURN TO A NE HDG OF 050 DEGS. I WAS HAND FLYING THE ACFT AND CLBING OUT AT APPROX 4000 FPM AND 245 KTS INDICATED. PASSING THROUGH 7300', THE CTLR TOLD US TO LEVEL OFF AT 7000'. THE F/O ACKNOWLEDGED 7000' AND I STARTED PUSH OVER TO GO BACK TO 7000'. ANOTHER CTLR CAME ON FREQ AT THIS TIME AND TOLD US TO CONTINUE CLB TO 8000'. WE ACKNOWLEDGED AND LEVELED OFF AT 8000'. THE NEW CTLR, APPARENTLY A SUPVR, TOLD US AN LTT JET WAS AT OUR 12 O'CLOCK POS CLBING OUT OF 8500' GOING TO 10000'. I DON'T RECALL EXACTLY THE HORIZ DISTANCE, BUT I BELIEVE IT WAS 2 1/2-3 MI. I MADE THE COMMENT TO THE F/O THAT IT LOOKED CLOSE UPON VISUAL CONTACT WITH THE TFC. AFTER CLRING TFC, WE WERE CLRED ON COURSE WITH NO FURTHER PROBS.
