Narrative:

Failed to check NOTAM's and landed on closed runway of airport with tower closed. Approach control mentioned NOTAM's for the airport but did not mention that runway 16/34 was closed. Nor was there any mention of it on the ASOS. The only approaches to this airport are to 16 and it was necessary to shoot the approach to get below the 2;000' overcast. We broke out to excellent visibility. The first officer activated the approach lighting system but initially we could not make out the runway. We realized the approach light were so bright that they seemed to be over-powering the runway lights. In the flare we realized that the runway lights were not on; but the runway was well defined by the aircraft lights. The runway seemed a little rough and as we approached a line of cones we realized that the runway was closed. Obviously; checking NOTAM's would have prevented this incursion but there was no lighted X to indicate that the runway was closed and ATC made no mention of it. We were very fortunate that there was no damage other than my pride and confidence.
