Narrative:

I was notified by my chief pilot that the dispatch release for an earlier flight was missing an MEL. It was MEL 25-60-2d for the automated external defibrillator (aed). At the time of the preflight; I noticed that the MEL in question; was in the maintenance logbook in the aircraft; but I failed to notice that the item was in fact; an MEL item. I thought the aed discrepancy was a non-essential function; deferred maintenance item; or cdl item; which was not required to be on the dispatch release. So; we accidentally departed with incorrect dispatch paperwork.
