Narrative:

While cruising at FL370 in relatively smooth air and in IMC conditions; fort worth center advised a 'weather area' at our 12 o'clock of moderate to severe intensity. Our weather radar was depicting only green so I assumed what the controller was seeing was well below our altitude. As it turned out; we continued on the same course and encountered moderate to borderline severe turbulence for 15 to 20 seconds. In addition; the autopilot was not able to hold our assigned altitude and we briefly deviated plus 500. In the future; I'll request a better course if advised of such an area even when our equipment shows little or no activity.
