Narrative:

We had been waiting in a line of 30 aircraft for takeoff from runway 04L at ewr. Switched over to tower frequency when our turn; cleared in to position and hold. Copied; readback. Sat in position for about 1 minute when a very annoyed controller came on frequency: 'this is the second call; you are cleared for takeoff; you are supposed to be operating on your top antenna'. So we did. Later talking to airline acquaintances; there is a dead spot in that area and you should operate on top antenna. We were operating on the lower antenna. Neither ground control nor tower ever mentioned that. This is not noted on commercial airport charts/notes. Nor is it mentioned in NOTAMS for ewr. So how exactly we were supposed to know?
