Narrative:
I installed the wrong fire bottle in the cockpit. I removed a manufacturer part number (mpn) (5-1121) fire extinguisher and installed a mpn (FR5) bottle. I first did try to install the correct bottle; verified per the illustrated parts catalog; but it just would not fit. So I put the optional equipment on; and it fit. The conclusion was that the bracket in the cockpit was the wrong bracket. I should have found that out when the bottle I was trying to install didn't fit. It should have sounded warning bells. But it was a busy night; and I didn't want to spend half the night; trying to figure out why the bottle didn't fit. My assumption is it was just another type of fire bottle. And a fire bottle is a fire bottle. So the wrong bottle was installed.

Title: A Mechanic described the events that contributed to his not checking why; a newer type of cockpit portable halon fire bottle could not be installed. Instead; he installed an older style bottle with a pressure gauge that was not effective for that B757-200; even though the illustrated parts catalog (IPC) indicated it was optional equipment.
