Narrative:

I was cleared to my destination airport from sna via the anaheim three departure; lake hughes transition; gmn; ave; sjc direct. I had not flown this departure procedure previously and studied my commercial chart depiction of it before departing. The commercial chart depiction was graphical and; as I recall; did not include text other than 'fly heading 220 on departure; radar vectors to sli.' from sli; the graphical depiction showed a route along V459 to lhs; which is what I assumed; was implied by 'lake hughes transition.' after departure I was given various vectors which did not take me to sli. As these vectors did not seem to comply with the departure procedure and as I was never told; 'resume anaheim 3 departure' I assumed that I was being vectored to lhs and was no longer required to fly the departure procedure. Eventually I was told to intercept the pom 164 radial; which I did; and was handed off to another controller. Not realizing this controller expected me to turn toward darts at bayjy (part of the departure procedure); I continued on the pom 164 radial. I received a tongue-lashing from the controller; compounded by the fact that I had dropped my departure procedure plate and could not locate it to discuss with him. This was then followed by vectors to intercept V459; and the rest of the trip continued without incident. In the comfort of my home I have now downloaded the 'government' depiction of the ANAHM3.sli departure procedure which includes a text description that clearly explains that I should have expected to fly from sli to poxku to bayjy to darts and thence lhs. This was certainly not clear to me from the commercial chart plate of the departure procedure. Lessons learned: 1. From an unfamiliar airport I should have filed 'no departure procedures.' 2. I should have studied the departure procedure in more detail. 3. I should have queried the controllers whether they were still expecting me to follow the departure procedure or whether I was receiving vectors to lhs.

Title: A light aircraft pilot deviated from the Anaheim Three departure procedure because of chart confusion. The reporter mentioned the commercial chart was not as detailed as the government chart in text description.

Narrative: I was cleared to my destination airport from SNA via the Anaheim Three Departure; Lake Hughes transition; GMN; AVE; SJC direct.
