Narrative:

During cruise at FL410; center issued initial descent clearance to FL360. Pilot not flying accepted clearance and both pilots confirmed. We began a descent at 1000 FPM and almost immediately received a TCAS TA. Pilot not flying reduced the scale of our TCAS display and; seeing traffic below; we reduced our descent rate to 300 FPM. We then almost immediately received a TCAS climb resolution advisory. We immediately disconnected the autopilot and maneuvered in accordance with the TCAS RA. The pilot not flying advised ATC 'TCAS climb'. Upon receiving the 'monitor vertical speed' command we leveled at 41;200 ft and were then cleared back to FL410. The 737 then queried ATC as to what happened. Controller replied; 'I had an airplane on descent'. Prior to switching frequencies we asked if we had; indeed; been cleared to FL360 before. The controller said 'yes'. We hacked the time when controller made these remarks so we could have the tapes pulled if necessary. The first officer then checked on our passengers to make certain there were no injuries during the maneuver.

The pilot not flying advised ATC 'TCAS CLIMB'. Upon receiving the 'MONITOR VERTICAL SPEED' command we leveled at 41;200 FT and were then cleared back to FL410.
