Narrative:
I installed incorrect GPS antenna on aircraft. I started the shift with the correct part number antenna; verified with ipc 34-58-02. I opened the box and found a used antenna with old sealant on it and no o-ring. I was upset that I was to install a used antenna on an aircraft with extensive history with GPS #2 problems. Talking with our maintenance stores; they said they had 1 more in stock. We opened the box and found a new antenna. I was so relieved to have a new part for this ongoing problem that I grabbed the antenna and installed it on the aircraft without again checking the part number against the ipc. As the antenna I installed did not fix the problem; I updated the defect in the maintenance tracking system and the aircraft continued under MEL 34-45A. Ongoing problems with parts availability.
