Narrative:
On initial descent; I observed the door warning light illuminate followed by the upper half of the passenger door opening. I completed the abnormal checklist for cabin door open inflight and landed uneventfully. Before engine start; company personnel shut the main cabin door and I verified the door warning light was extinguished. From the cockpit; this is the only way to verify the door is secure. Apparently; it was not actually secure; but still gave indication of being secure; therefore; not inspiring confidence in the warning system.
