Narrative:

Took clearance for aircraft ahead similar call sign air carrier a xyy, ours air carrier a abyy. Copilot read back instructions to turn left 050 degrees, climb to 17000' and included our call sign. We executed turn from present 170 degree heading. During turn departure asked where we were going. We repeated clearance. Departure said to level at 5000' on 090 degree heading. We complied. No apparent traffic conflict.
