Narrative:

During cruise en route to ZZZ 'flaps fail' caution message appeared (flaps were at zero). The first officer flew the aircraft and I ran the appropriate cfm checklist per company policy. We contacted dispatch through ZZZ operations and I notified the flight attendant of the situation. I also made an announcement informing the passenger that we would be landing a little bit faster than usual; etc. As an added precaution; I declared an emergency and had the trucks wait for us. I took control of the aircraft for the approach and landing portion of the flight. The actual approach and landing was uneventful and we continued to the gate without further incident.
