Narrative:

Under direction of senior mechanic; I opened the fan cowl of #3 engine with another mechanic and performed lockout procedure as instructed. Supplemental information from acn 804396: directed to assist mechanic in inoperative'ing thrust reverser. I would like to be trained on the general electric engines. Callback conversation with reporter acn 804394 revealed the following information: reporter stated they followed instructions from a senior mechanic on procedures to lockout the #3 engine reverser. Reporter stated neither he; nor the second mechanic; were familiar with the ge CF6-80C type engines on the B747-400. These ge engine reversers are pneumatically operated; compared with the pw 4000 engines; which move hydraulically. Reporter stated the senior mechanic had pulled; but failed to collar the reverser circuit breaker as required by the maintenance manual. This was noticed by the downline maintenance station. Reporter stated he was the one who signed off the paperwork for accomplishing the reverser lockout procedure.
