Narrative:

I have flown an exhaustive summer like most reserve pilots; often maxing out my schedule in terms of hours flown; days on duty; etc. I had very little sleep last night; as a result of cumulative stress and was number one the next day; lining up for a short call. I decided I would be too fatigued to fly if assigned short call flying (a certainty during summer) and called the crew desk to advise I would be unavailable the next day for an assignment. I was good for 3 days and flew the remaining two without incident. This is the only time I have ever called in fatigued; and feel that; by and large; I can keep my personal house in order. That being said; at times when that is not the case for various reasons; I consider it a mandate (per the fom and FARS) to not accept a flying assignment.
