Narrative:

On climb out; passing 5000 ft; left engine compressor stall. Flight attendants reported smoke in the cabin. Accomplished checklist; shut down engine; returned to ZZZ for landing. Taxied to gate. Supplemental information from acn 801287: postflt inspection and debrief with maintenance showed substantial engine damage. Maintenance advised aircraft would be removed from service and that they would enter item into log this we should have also done. After speaking with station operations; crew desk; fire department; airport operations; airport security; dispatch; and the passenger; I just forgot to enter log item.
