Narrative:

We received the following clearance; 'cleared the salt lake 9 departure wasatch 094 degree radial myton 303 degree radial myton jnc J15 rattle snake maintain 230 KIAS as filed.' clearance delivery then immediately amended the clearance to delete the speed limit. Tower then cleared us for takeoff heading 340 degrees. We departed and on passing wasatch; turned to intercept and track the 094 degree radial. We were immediately queried by ATC and resumed a 340 degree heading. We have thoroughly reviewed the salt lake 9 departure and general SID procedures and have accepted the fact that we botched the procedure. I do understand the purpose of the intersection of the tch 094 degree radial and mtu 303 degree radial in our clearance; but think it confused us because we first had to cross the 094 degree radial on the climb. Second; the nature of events that day somehow gave us the impression that its purpose was to get us out of the way of the turbojet traffic; that the SID had been amended. It's like avoiding the word 'takeoff' in clrncs except to actually clear an aircraft for takeoff or cancel a takeoff clearance. My suggestion to prevent a recurrence would be to: 1) name the intersection of the tch 094 degree radial and the mtu 303 degree radial to preclude saying 094 degree radial in the clearance. 2) make it a transition with a curved black line and a DME fix with a minimum crossing altitude of 11000 ft. 3) de-clutter it by making it a separate procedure (SID) for eastbound departures.

Title: FLT CREW MISUNDERSTANDS SLC 9 DEPARTURE PROCEDURES AND TURNS ON COURSE OVER TCH.

Narrative: WE RECEIVED THE FOLLOWING CLRNC; 'CLRED THE SALT LAKE 9 DEP WASATCH 094 DEG RADIAL MYTON 303 DEG RADIAL MYTON JNC J15 RATTLE SNAKE MAINTAIN 230 KIAS AS FILED.' CLRNC DELIVERY THEN IMMEDIATELY AMENDED THE CLRNC TO DELETE THE SPD LIMIT. TWR THEN CLRED US FOR TKOF HDG 340 DEGS. WE DEPARTED AND ON PASSING WASATCH; TURNED TO INTERCEPT AND TRACK THE 094 DEG RADIAL. WE WERE IMMEDIATELY QUERIED BY ATC AND RESUMED A 340 DEG HDG. WE HAVE THOROUGHLY REVIEWED THE SALT LAKE 9 DEP AND GENERAL SID PROCS AND HAVE ACCEPTED THE FACT THAT WE BOTCHED THE PROC. I DO UNDERSTAND THE PURPOSE OF THE INTXN OF THE TCH 094 DEG RADIAL AND MTU 303 DEG RADIAL IN OUR CLRNC; BUT THINK IT CONFUSED US BECAUSE WE FIRST HAD TO CROSS THE 094 DEG RADIAL ON THE CLB. SECOND; THE NATURE OF EVENTS THAT DAY SOMEHOW GAVE US THE IMPRESSION THAT ITS PURPOSE WAS TO GET US OUT OF THE WAY OF THE TURBOJET TFC; THAT THE SID HAD BEEN AMENDED. IT'S LIKE AVOIDING THE WORD 'TKOF' IN CLRNCS EXCEPT TO ACTUALLY CLR AN ACFT FOR TKOF OR CANCEL A TKOF CLRNC. MY SUGGESTION TO PREVENT A RECURRENCE WOULD BE TO: 1) NAME THE INTXN OF THE TCH 094 DEG RADIAL AND THE MTU 303 DEG RADIAL TO PRECLUDE SAYING 094 DEG RADIAL IN THE CLRNC. 2) MAKE IT A TRANSITION WITH A CURVED BLACK LINE AND A DME FIX WITH A MINIMUM XING ALT OF 11000 FT. 3) DE-CLUTTER IT BY MAKING IT A SEPARATE PROC (SID) FOR EBOUND DEPS.
