Narrative:

On this flight; we had come in from our previous flight late; and had a gate change. This gave us about 45 minutes between flts. During our preflight duties; I loaded our flight plan from our release into the FMS. We were planned for the saint johns 3 departure (SJN3.sjn). When I received the pre departure clearance via the ACARS; there was an amendment on it which read: MAXXO1 cnx. Underneath; it said 'filed flight plan SJN3.sjn....etc.' I thought to myself: 'why do I care if the MAXXO1 departure is cancelled; I'm filed on the sjn departure?' being in a high workload area (we were late; and struggling to get caught up); I interpreted this as 'MAXXO1 cancelled' but it actually meant we were being assigned to the maxxo 1 departure with the corona transition; cnx is the three letter identifier for a VOR on the departure procedure. In my hurry to catch up; I'd mistaken a change in our routing to be a closure of a departure or some other thing which I didn't think much about because I believed I was doing the sjn departure. If I had stopped to think about it; I would probably have made the connection; but; as I said earlier; I was trying to make up some time. The result is that we departed with the sjn 3 in the FMC; and not the maxxo 1. After takeoff; we flew the departure; and at phx 9.5 DME; made a turn to the north; not a turn to the south. ATC was quick to notice; and with some vectors and coordination with center; put us on the sjn departure. ATC kindly pointed out to us that we were flying the wrong departure. Once the error was discovered; we were given vectors while ATC coordinated with ARTCC to put us on the departure we were originally filed on; the sjn 3. Once we were on with abq center; we were given a phone number to call; which we did upon arrival. The phx departure person said they would be forwarding a report up the ladder. I believe that this would have been avoided with any other departure or VOR identifier. Cnx is the common abbreviation for 'cancelled' and when you see a message on the ACARS with 'cnx' at the end of it; that is what you tend to read. If you are at a time of high workload; or unfamiliar; it can really bite you. The three letter identifier for corona VOR should be changed. Also; we were experiencing a time of high workload; having had an aircraft swap; and a reduced turn time due to being late arriving on our previous flight. In addition; I am a reserve who had a two hour call out at XA25; and when I arrived; found that my first turn was a ZZZ turn with a line check. All these factors had me a little 'off balance;' and I didn't notice a few things I should have. In the future; I should not let my concern with getting the flight out on time interfere with getting my job done correctly. Also; the three letter identifier for the cnx VOR ought to be changed.

Title: B757 FO RPTS CONFUSION OVER REVISED SEGMENT OF PDC AND ASSUMES MAXXO 1 CNX MEANS THE MAXXO 1 IS CANCELLED FLY THE SJN 3. TRACK DEV.

Narrative: ON THIS FLT; WE HAD COME IN FROM OUR PREVIOUS FLT LATE; AND HAD A GATE CHANGE. THIS GAVE US ABOUT 45 MINUTES BETWEEN FLTS. DURING OUR PREFLT DUTIES; I LOADED OUR FLT PLAN FROM OUR RELEASE INTO THE FMS. WE WERE PLANNED FOR THE SAINT JOHNS 3 DEP (SJN3.SJN). WHEN I RECEIVED THE PDC VIA THE ACARS; THERE WAS AN AMENDMENT ON IT WHICH READ: MAXXO1 CNX. UNDERNEATH; IT SAID 'FILED FLT PLAN SJN3.SJN....ETC.' I THOUGHT TO MYSELF: 'WHY DO I CARE IF THE MAXXO1 DEP IS CANCELLED; I'M FILED ON THE SJN DEP?' BEING IN A HIGH WORKLOAD AREA (WE WERE LATE; AND STRUGGLING TO GET CAUGHT UP); I INTERPRETED THIS AS 'MAXXO1 CANCELLED' BUT IT ACTUALLY MEANT WE WERE BEING ASSIGNED TO THE MAXXO 1 DEP WITH THE CORONA TRANSITION; CNX IS THE THREE LETTER IDENTIFIER FOR A VOR ON THE DEP PROC. IN MY HURRY TO CATCH UP; I'D MISTAKEN A CHANGE IN OUR ROUTING TO BE A CLOSURE OF A DEP OR SOME OTHER THING WHICH I DIDN'T THINK MUCH ABOUT BECAUSE I BELIEVED I WAS DOING THE SJN DEP. AFTER TAKEOFF; WE FLEW THE DEP; AND AT PHX 9.5 DME; MADE A TURN TO THE NORTH; NOT A TURN TO THE SOUTH. ATC WAS QUICK TO NOTICE; AND WITH SOME VECTORS AND COORD WITH CENTER; PUT US ON THE SJN DEP. ATC KINDLY POINTED OUT TO US THAT WE WERE FLYING THE WRONG DEP. ONCE THE ERROR WAS DISCOVERED; WE WERE GIVEN VECTORS WHILE ATC COORDINATED WITH ARTCC TO PUT US ON THE DEP WE WERE ORIGINALLY FILED ON; THE SJN 3. ONCE WE WERE ON WITH ABQ CENTER; WE WERE GIVEN A PHONE NUMBER TO CALL; WHICH WE DID UPON ARR. THE PHX DEP PERSON SAID THEY WOULD BE FORWARDING A RPT UP THE LADDER. I BELIEVE THAT THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED WITH ANY OTHER DEP OR VOR IDENTIFIER. ALSO; WE WERE EXPERIENCING A TIME OF HIGH WORKLOAD; HAVING HAD AN ACFT SWAP; AND A REDUCED TURN TIME DUE TO BEING LATE ARRIVING ON OUR PREVIOUS FLT. IN THE FUTURE; I SHOULD NOT LET MY CONCERN WITH GETTING THE FLT OUT ON TIME INTERFERE WITH GETTING MY JOB DONE CORRECTLY. ALSO; THE THREE LETTER IDENTIFIER FOR THE CNX VOR OUGHT TO BE CHANGED.
