Narrative:

We received our clearance for the souby departure; mnate transition. It was different from what had been filed for us by dispatch. I was putting data in the pms/carousel by latitude/longitude since it is a very old navigation system in our aircraft. I was very busy since we were close to departure; I had to brief the crew. I looked at the SID but failed to fully understand the departure and was not aware of it. Taxi and takeoff were normal. When tower failed to pass us over to departure control; I told the first officer to switch over to it. As he did so; I saw that my needle on my ADI and HSI was bearing to the right showing me a turn to the right. I had begun a shallow 15 degree bank turn; called for flaps up and was clearing as my first officer was switching radio control. I saw an aircraft out in the distance at least 6 mi away since there was no traffic showing on our TCAS; which was on the 6 mi range. The aircraft appeared to be close to our altitude and it was moving left to right. I saw that I would go behind it so I merely shallowed out my turn to make sure there would be no conflict. At that moment center called us and asked where we were going. My first officer stated that we were proceeding toward mnate. Center stated that he had not told me to turn. It ws then I realized that my navigation information was incorrect due to the limitation of the system and my failure to fully understand the SID. I learned this after I corrected back and had time later in the flight to look at the SID again. Control didn't seem to be too upset but did say that he wanted to make sure I didn't conflict with the B767; which was the aircraft I had seen earlier. It was very late and we were the only 2 planes in the sky. There was never a concern about an near midair collision because of our distance; but I wanted to make sure center understood that I had a visual. My suggestion is that when there is more to the SID; a 'see below' message be on the box depicting the route. It would cue someone to continue reading perhaps. I wish our company would replace all of our different navigation system (we have 5 pms/carousel litton 72; litton 92; carousel; FMS) with just FMS as they said they would but now with fuel prices such as they are; we have been told we have to try and stay proficient on all 5. That's almost impossible since a pilot may not fly a navigation system such as the 92 or the FMS but once or twice in a yr. The company should have to standardize the entire fleet as a safety concern. An FMS would have depicted the correct route on the map mode if it were correctly entered.

Title: B747 CAPTAIN; REQUIRED TO USE ONE OF FIVE DIFFERENT TYPES OF NAV SYSTEMS ON HIS ACR'S FLEET; FAILS TO PROGRAM THE SOUBY SID FROM MIA CORRECTLY.

Narrative: WE RECEIVED OUR CLRNC FOR THE SOUBY DEP; MNATE TRANSITION. IT WAS DIFFERENT FROM WHAT HAD BEEN FILED FOR US BY DISPATCH. I WAS PUTTING DATA IN THE PMS/CAROUSEL BY LATITUDE/LONGITUDE SINCE IT IS A VERY OLD NAV SYS IN OUR ACFT. I WAS VERY BUSY SINCE WE WERE CLOSE TO DEP; I HAD TO BRIEF THE CREW. I LOOKED AT THE SID BUT FAILED TO FULLY UNDERSTAND THE DEP AND WAS NOT AWARE OF IT. TAXI AND TKOF WERE NORMAL. WHEN TWR FAILED TO PASS US OVER TO DEP CTL; I TOLD THE FO TO SWITCH OVER TO IT. AS HE DID SO; I SAW THAT MY NEEDLE ON MY ADI AND HSI WAS BEARING TO THE R SHOWING ME A TURN TO THE R. I HAD BEGUN A SHALLOW 15 DEG BANK TURN; CALLED FOR FLAPS UP AND WAS CLRING AS MY FO WAS SWITCHING RADIO CTL. I SAW AN ACFT OUT IN THE DISTANCE AT LEAST 6 MI AWAY SINCE THERE WAS NO TFC SHOWING ON OUR TCAS; WHICH WAS ON THE 6 MI RANGE. THE ACFT APPEARED TO BE CLOSE TO OUR ALT AND IT WAS MOVING L TO R. I SAW THAT I WOULD GO BEHIND IT SO I MERELY SHALLOWED OUT MY TURN TO MAKE SURE THERE WOULD BE NO CONFLICT. AT THAT MOMENT CTR CALLED US AND ASKED WHERE WE WERE GOING. MY FO STATED THAT WE WERE PROCEEDING TOWARD MNATE. CTR STATED THAT HE HAD NOT TOLD ME TO TURN. IT WS THEN I REALIZED THAT MY NAV INFO WAS INCORRECT DUE TO THE LIMITATION OF THE SYS AND MY FAILURE TO FULLY UNDERSTAND THE SID. I LEARNED THIS AFTER I CORRECTED BACK AND HAD TIME LATER IN THE FLT TO LOOK AT THE SID AGAIN. CTL DIDN'T SEEM TO BE TOO UPSET BUT DID SAY THAT HE WANTED TO MAKE SURE I DIDN'T CONFLICT WITH THE B767; WHICH WAS THE ACFT I HAD SEEN EARLIER. IT WAS VERY LATE AND WE WERE THE ONLY 2 PLANES IN THE SKY. THERE WAS NEVER A CONCERN ABOUT AN NMAC BECAUSE OF OUR DISTANCE; BUT I WANTED TO MAKE SURE CTR UNDERSTOOD THAT I HAD A VISUAL. MY SUGGESTION IS THAT WHEN THERE IS MORE TO THE SID; A 'SEE BELOW' MESSAGE BE ON THE BOX DEPICTING THE RTE. IT WOULD CUE SOMEONE TO CONTINUE READING PERHAPS. I WISH OUR COMPANY WOULD REPLACE ALL OF OUR DIFFERENT NAV SYS (WE HAVE 5 PMS/CAROUSEL LITTON 72; LITTON 92; CAROUSEL; FMS) WITH JUST FMS AS THEY SAID THEY WOULD BUT NOW WITH FUEL PRICES SUCH AS THEY ARE; WE HAVE BEEN TOLD WE HAVE TO TRY AND STAY PROFICIENT ON ALL 5. THAT'S ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE SINCE A PLT MAY NOT FLY A NAV SYS SUCH AS THE 92 OR THE FMS BUT ONCE OR TWICE IN A YR. THE COMPANY SHOULD HAVE TO STANDARDIZE THE ENTIRE FLEET AS A SAFETY CONCERN. AN FMS WOULD HAVE DEPICTED THE CORRECT RTE ON THE MAP MODE IF IT WERE CORRECTLY ENTERED.
