Narrative:

The controller had cleared me to taxi to runway 3 via txwys C and C1. He amended this instruction short of taxiway C1 and requested that I turn onto taxiway C2 instead. To enter runway 3 from this location required a right turn onto runway 35 before another right turn onto runway 3. The controller alerted me of this by telling me that I needed to make a right turn to enter the runway. At the time I assumed this was because I was not at the extreme end of the runway (runway 35). After being cleared for runway 3; I turned onto runway 35 and proceeded to take off because I believed that I was on the correct runway. The approaching aircraft to runway 17 was asked to circle. Upon hearing this I realized my mistake and told the tower that I was aborting my takeoff. The controller told me to continue the takeoff and make a turn midfield away from the approaching aircraft. Had I checked my heading upon entering the runway; this incursion would have been avoided. The close proximity of the intersection of runways at taxiway C2 and the amended instructions contributed to my misinterp of my position. In the future a check of runway heading will always be included in my checklist.

Title: A PA28 PLT TOOK OFF FROM RWY 35 AT THE INTXN OF RWYS 35 AND 3 WITH CLRNC FOR RWY 3 BECAUSE HE DID NOT CHK HIS HDG AT THE RWY'S END.

Narrative: THE CTLR HAD CLRED ME TO TAXI TO RWY 3 VIA TXWYS C AND C1. HE AMENDED THIS INSTRUCTION SHORT OF TXWY C1 AND REQUESTED THAT I TURN ONTO TXWY C2 INSTEAD. TO ENTER RWY 3 FROM THIS LOCATION REQUIRED A R TURN ONTO RWY 35 BEFORE ANOTHER R TURN ONTO RWY 3. THE CTLR ALERTED ME OF THIS BY TELLING ME THAT I NEEDED TO MAKE A R TURN TO ENTER THE RWY. AT THE TIME I ASSUMED THIS WAS BECAUSE I WAS NOT AT THE EXTREME END OF THE RWY (RWY 35). AFTER BEING CLRED FOR RWY 3; I TURNED ONTO RWY 35 AND PROCEEDED TO TAKE OFF BECAUSE I BELIEVED THAT I WAS ON THE CORRECT RWY. THE APCHING ACFT TO RWY 17 WAS ASKED TO CIRCLE. UPON HEARING THIS I REALIZED MY MISTAKE AND TOLD THE TWR THAT I WAS ABORTING MY TKOF. THE CTLR TOLD ME TO CONTINUE THE TKOF AND MAKE A TURN MIDFIELD AWAY FROM THE APCHING ACFT. HAD I CHKED MY HDG UPON ENTERING THE RWY; THIS INCURSION WOULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED. THE CLOSE PROX OF THE INTXN OF RWYS AT TXWY C2 AND THE AMENDED INSTRUCTIONS CONTRIBUTED TO MY MISINTERP OF MY POS. IN THE FUTURE A CHK OF RWY HDG WILL ALWAYS BE INCLUDED IN MY CHKLIST.
