Narrative:

I was preparing to depart (asg) springdale; ar; to return to ZZZ2. I called ground control for taxi instructions. They gave me the following: cleared to taxi to runway 18; all the way. I took this to mean I was cleared to runway 18. There is a problem taxiing from the east side of the ramp for runway 18. Normally; we receive instructions to go all the way as I understood this to be the case. On the east side of the airport; the taxiway does not go all the way to the end of runway 18. You have to cross runway 18 to get to the long taxiway on the west side of runway 18. I was advised that I was wrong and should have held before crossing runway 18 at the intersection hold line. This is not the first time this has happened to other traffic. It sometimes gets confusing. Breakdown in communications is the culprit. I submit the letter in the name of safety and I am personally going to hold at the hold line before crossing until I have a second ok to cross. No problems existed at this time. The controller was doing a good job and is well liked in his area by all pilots.

Title: SMA TAXIING FOR DEP TO RWY 18 AT ASG CROSSED RWY 18 FROM EAST SIDE; BELIEVING APPROVAL WAS RECEIVED FROM ATC.

Narrative: I WAS PREPARING TO DEPART (ASG) SPRINGDALE; AR; TO RETURN TO ZZZ2. I CALLED GND CTL FOR TAXI INSTRUCTIONS. THEY GAVE ME THE FOLLOWING: CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 18; ALL THE WAY. I TOOK THIS TO MEAN I WAS CLRED TO RWY 18. THERE IS A PROB TAXIING FROM THE E SIDE OF THE RAMP FOR RWY 18. NORMALLY; WE RECEIVE INSTRUCTIONS TO GO ALL THE WAY AS I UNDERSTOOD THIS TO BE THE CASE. ON THE E SIDE OF THE ARPT; THE TXWY DOES NOT GO ALL THE WAY TO THE END OF RWY 18. YOU HAVE TO CROSS RWY 18 TO GET TO THE LONG TXWY ON THE W SIDE OF RWY 18. I WAS ADVISED THAT I WAS WRONG AND SHOULD HAVE HELD BEFORE XING RWY 18 AT THE INTXN HOLD LINE. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED TO OTHER TFC. IT SOMETIMES GETS CONFUSING. BREAKDOWN IN COMS IS THE CULPRIT. I SUBMIT THE LETTER IN THE NAME OF SAFETY AND I AM PERSONALLY GOING TO HOLD AT THE HOLD LINE BEFORE XING UNTIL I HAVE A SECOND OK TO CROSS. NO PROBS EXISTED AT THIS TIME. THE CTLR WAS DOING A GOOD JOB AND IS WELL LIKED IN HIS AREA BY ALL PLTS.
