Narrative:

We looked up WX information on line for the flight from waco; tx; to odessa; tx. We did not obtain a NOTAM report that would have indicated that runway 20 at odessa was closed. We utilized flight following from odessa until we were unable to receive radar coverage and radar service was terminated before reaching midland. Upon arrival at odessa; we contacted unicom and received wind information and entered 45 degree to downwind landing runway 16 then when we were on base we realized the wind was a factor in our landing so we called out landing on runway 20 which was more aligned with the wind. No runway closure information was broadcast to us and we continued our landing. On rollout after about 1000 ft; we struck railroad ties that were on the runway. Our problem could have been rectified by obtaining all NOTAMS before departure. An overflt of the airport may have revealed the runway closure also.

Title: SMA PLT LNDG AT ODO FAILED TO OBTAIN NOTAM INDICATING RWY 20 CLOSED; LANDED ON RWY AND STRUCK OBJECTS; REPORTER CONCLUDING PLT ERROR.

Narrative: WE LOOKED UP WX INFO ON LINE FOR THE FLT FROM WACO; TX; TO ODESSA; TX. WE DID NOT OBTAIN A NOTAM RPT THAT WOULD HAVE INDICATED THAT RWY 20 AT ODESSA WAS CLOSED. WE UTILIZED FLT FOLLOWING FROM ODESSA UNTIL WE WERE UNABLE TO RECEIVE RADAR COVERAGE AND RADAR SVC WAS TERMINATED BEFORE REACHING MIDLAND. UPON ARR AT ODESSA; WE CONTACTED UNICOM AND RECEIVED WIND INFO AND ENTERED 45 DEG TO DOWNWIND LNDG RWY 16 THEN WHEN WE WERE ON BASE WE REALIZED THE WIND WAS A FACTOR IN OUR LNDG SO WE CALLED OUT LNDG ON RWY 20 WHICH WAS MORE ALIGNED WITH THE WIND. NO RWY CLOSURE INFO WAS BROADCAST TO US AND WE CONTINUED OUR LNDG. ON ROLLOUT AFTER ABOUT 1000 FT; WE STRUCK RAILROAD TIES THAT WERE ON THE RWY. OUR PROB COULD HAVE BEEN RECTIFIED BY OBTAINING ALL NOTAMS BEFORE DEP. AN OVERFLT OF THE ARPT MAY HAVE REVEALED THE RWY CLOSURE ALSO.
