Narrative:

Our flight out of ZZZ was delayed by about 4 hours due to maintenance and ultimately a plane change. At the end of it; I had been awake 19 hours. The problem is not the hours awake. It's that at the end; it was XA00 am. The first officer and I had a frank conversation in the cockpit before pushback about fatigue. We both agreed we could do the flight. I thought I'd be ok at the beginning of the flight. And I was for a while. Looking back on it today; after some sleep; I can see that I made a mistake. I should have pulled the plug in ZZZ due to the time of arrival that I had no chance to prepare my body for.
