Narrative:

Normal cruise at FL400. Left pack in off position for noise. Received the flight deck equipment smoke EICAS message. QRH procedure reviewed. Immediately selected left pack back to operating position. Received equipment overheat EICAS message accompanied by acrid smell of smoke or electrical fire. All occupants on oxygen for remainder of flight. QRH procedure for equipment overheat accomplished to alternate fan. Neither light went out and checklist was delayed according to instructions. Declared emergency and proceeded to nearest suitable airport ZZZ. WX display message on HSI followed almost immediately by the loss of backgnd coloring in eadi. Attempted contact with company and unable. ACARS was deferred. Asked center to advise company of divert and emergency that had been declared. Assigned 1 jumpseater control of hazmat envelope in case of ground evacuate/evacuation. Continued high speed descent with additional message left recirculation fan EICAS message. Made visual approach to runway 17. Complied with stable approach criteria at 1000 ft AGL. Landed and exited runway to right on taxiway after query from tower regarding hazmat on board. Stopped aircraft just clear of runway and shut down engines and all electrical power. Crash fire rescue equipment immediately used thermal imaging camera to determine status. I was in contact with chief and elected to not perform emergency evacuate/evacuation. Stairs were brought from FBO in short order and we deplaned. Attempted contact by cell phone with system operations. Left message that was returned quickly. I received excellent support from my immediate contact parties at my company.

CFR IMMEDIATELY USED THERMAL IMAGING CAMERA TO DETERMINE STATUS. I WAS IN CONTACT WITH CHIEF AND ELECTED TO NOT PERFORM EMER EVAC. STAIRS WERE BROUGHT FROM FBO IN SHORT ORDER AND WE DEPLANED. ATTEMPTED CONTACT BY CELL PHONE WITH SYS OPS. LEFT MESSAGE THAT WAS RETURNED QUICKLY. I RECEIVED EXCELLENT SUPPORT FROM MY IMMEDIATE CONTACT PARTIES AT MY COMPANY.
