Narrative:

While in the pattern at ZZZ there was a miscom between myself and ATC. While on left downwind for runway 18 I was told to remain south of runway 9/27. I saw that there was departing jet traffic; and extended my pattern to give the departing traffic time to depart in order to avoid wake turbulence. While still on the tower frequency; I listened to the second communications frequency to double check the winds due to gusty conditions. I did not hear communications between the tower and an arriving helicopter while I listened to the winds. As a result of my extended downwind I ended up on a base leg north of runway 9/27. As a result an arriving helicopter had to deviate.
