Narrative:

On takeoff at about rotation; noticed noxious burning smell. Called flight attendants and asked if ovens were on and informed they were not and nothing in the galley was on. Flight attendants confirmed same odor in the cabin. After flaps up and initial turn on course was called by flight attendants that odor was getting worse and passenger were complaining. Turned off recirculation fans. Climbing through 10000 ft and odor not dissipating made decision to declare emergency and return immediately for landing. After landing and odor now dissipating and crash fire rescue equipment confirms no external abnormalities; taxied to gate and deplaned passenger.

Title: A B737 NG FLT CREW EXPERIENCED A BURNING SMELL SHORTLY AFTER TAKEOFF. THEY DECLARED AN EMERGENCY AND RETURNED TO LAND AT THEIR DEP ARPT.

Narrative: ON TKOF AT ABOUT ROTATION; NOTICED NOXIOUS BURNING SMELL. CALLED FLT ATTENDANTS AND ASKED IF OVENS WERE ON AND INFORMED THEY WERE NOT AND NOTHING IN THE GALLEY WAS ON. FLT ATTENDANTS CONFIRMED SAME ODOR IN THE CABIN. AFTER FLAPS UP AND INITIAL TURN ON COURSE WAS CALLED BY FLT ATTENDANTS THAT ODOR WAS GETTING WORSE AND PAX WERE COMPLAINING. TURNED OFF RECIRCULATION FANS. CLBING THROUGH 10000 FT AND ODOR NOT DISSIPATING MADE DECISION TO DECLARE EMER AND RETURN IMMEDIATELY FOR LNDG. AFTER LNDG AND ODOR NOW DISSIPATING AND CFR CONFIRMS NO EXTERNAL ABNORMALITIES; TAXIED TO GATE AND DEPLANED PAX.
