Narrative:

On turn; was instructed to do maintenance callout for checking part numbers for main landing gear. Found wrong landing gear installed. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter stated he couldn't remember which main gear (left or right) had a different serial number (south/north) than what was supposed to be installed. Aircraft was grounded; but his carrier's engineering decided to write a change order to allow continued operation of the aircraft with the incorrect serial numbered main gear until the next aircraft overhaul. Reporter stated he did not know if the incorrect main gear came from a vendor overhaul shop.

Title: A LINE MECHANIC REPORTS ON FINDING THE WRONG MAIN LANDING GEAR INSTALLED ON AN AIRBUS A320; AFTER CHECKING PART NUMBERS PER A MAINT CALLOUT.

Narrative: ON TURN; WAS INSTRUCTED TO DO MAINT CALLOUT FOR CHKING PART NUMBERS FOR MAIN LNDG GEAR. FOUND WRONG LNDG GEAR INSTALLED. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: REPORTER STATED HE COULDN'T REMEMBER WHICH MAIN GEAR (LEFT OR RIGHT) HAD A DIFFERENT SERIAL NUMBER (S/N) THAN WHAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE INSTALLED. ACFT WAS GROUNDED; BUT HIS CARRIER'S ENGINEERING DECIDED TO WRITE A CHANGE ORDER TO ALLOW CONTINUED OPERATION OF THE ACFT WITH THE INCORRECT SERIAL NUMBERED MAIN GEAR UNTIL THE NEXT ACFT OVERHAUL. REPORTER STATED HE DID NOT KNOW IF THE INCORRECT MAIN GEAR CAME FROM A VENDOR OVERHAUL SHOP.
