Narrative:

On departure from ZZZ; I had difficulty in getting the garmin 1000 programmed to fly the RNAV 1 departure procedure; which was given after takeoff and during climb out. I wandered around trying to get it programmed and did not go to the fix as directed. Getting established on course was finally accomplished by vectors from departure control. Too much attention was devoted to getting the GPS reprogrammed and not enough to flying the airplane. After being handed off to center; and while flying on autoplt; center noted an altitude variation and called it to my attention. The autoplt had dropped off altitude hold went unnoticed until center advised I was leaving my assigned altitude. I was approximately 400 ft low; as I recall; and climbed back to my previously assigned altitude. The remaining part of the flight was completed without any difficulty. I did not receive any complaints from departure or center but felt that I was not making a good impression with the controllers about my plting skills. This report is being submitted for that reason.

Title: C206 PLT WAS ISSUED AN RNAV DEP DURING CLIMBOUT. COURSE AND ALT DEVIATIONS OCCURRED WHILE THE PLT ATTEMPTED TO PROGRAM THE NAV SYSTEM.

Narrative: ON DEP FROM ZZZ; I HAD DIFFICULTY IN GETTING THE GARMIN 1000 PROGRAMMED TO FLY THE RNAV 1 DEP PROC; WHICH WAS GIVEN AFTER TKOF AND DURING CLBOUT. I WANDERED AROUND TRYING TO GET IT PROGRAMMED AND DID NOT GO TO THE FIX AS DIRECTED. GETTING ESTABLISHED ON COURSE WAS FINALLY ACCOMPLISHED BY VECTORS FROM DEP CTL. TOO MUCH ATTN WAS DEVOTED TO GETTING THE GPS REPROGRAMMED AND NOT ENOUGH TO FLYING THE AIRPLANE. AFTER BEING HANDED OFF TO CTR; AND WHILE FLYING ON AUTOPLT; CTR NOTED AN ALT VARIATION AND CALLED IT TO MY ATTN. THE AUTOPLT HAD DROPPED OFF ALT HOLD WENT UNNOTICED UNTIL CTR ADVISED I WAS LEAVING MY ASSIGNED ALT. I WAS APPROX 400 FT LOW; AS I RECALL; AND CLBED BACK TO MY PREVIOUSLY ASSIGNED ALT. THE REMAINING PART OF THE FLT WAS COMPLETED WITHOUT ANY DIFFICULTY. I DID NOT RECEIVE ANY COMPLAINTS FROM DEP OR CTR BUT FELT THAT I WAS NOT MAKING A GOOD IMPRESSION WITH THE CTLRS ABOUT MY PLTING SKILLS. THIS RPT IS BEING SUBMITTED FOR THAT REASON.
