Narrative:

Had given trainee 6.1 hours transition training. Was using reduced power to simulate loaded aircraft. Trainee aligned aircraft with runway centerline; applied brakes and increased torque to 600 pounds. He released brakes and increased torque to the agreed upon 1100 pound torque; at which point I applied right rudder to simulate a problem to check student on a rejected takeoff. The student retarded power and the aircraft partially left the runway to the left striking the snow berm with the left propeller. The student had activated the steering but had failed to engage it with the power lever button. He had made a conscious decision to not engage the steering because he said it made a smoother takeoff. He failed to communication this to me and by the time corrective action could have been taken by me; we had struck the propeller.

Title: DURING TRAINING IN LIGHT TWIN; INSTRUCTOR'S SIMULATED PROBLEM RESULTS IN STUDENT HITTING SNOW BANK CAUSING PROP DAMAGE.

THE STUDENT HAD ACTIVATED THE STEERING BUT HAD FAILED TO ENGAGE IT WITH THE PWR LEVER BUTTON. HE HAD MADE A CONSCIOUS DECISION TO NOT ENGAGE THE STEERING BECAUSE HE SAID IT MADE A SMOOTHER TKOF. HE FAILED TO COM THIS TO ME AND BY THE TIME CORRECTIVE ACTION COULD HAVE BEEN TAKEN BY ME; WE HAD STRUCK THE PROP.
